A young couple approached Sahiba Madan, principal architect, Insitu Design Studio to give their family home in Mumbai a contemporary touch yet retain its old-world vibe. A three-bedroom apartment in the Malabar area, the home originally belonged to the current owner’s grandmother, and had been in their family for 50 years.

In the parents’ room, who often visit the couple, arches give way to rectangular edges that are mimicked through the window frames, console, mirror and art on display. The balcony, though, is converted into a study featuring a custom desk and a large bookshelf to showcase their elaborate collection. “We divided this bookshelf into two parts, one of which rotates to allow access directly to the den in the primary bedroom,” reveals the design team. The flooring of the study is a bold teal-coloured tile with a floral motif border. The same colour scheme is found in the ceiling light above.
